kindred times and future goodbyes

‘kindred times and future goodbyes’ took place in an old, abandoned house in Tel Aviv.  the artists kept the location of their show a secret until the day of, when they announced it on their blog

Here’s what the artists had to say about their work:

“The wall paintings are a new periodic layer of paint that add on to the already existing peeled layers of time. The artists use these longstanding layers, which represent remains of personal stories and traces of memories, absorbing the existing textures and inhabiting the building with their artistic and contemporary interpretation. Although the new layer of paint created for this exhibition is soon to become covered with new layers of a renovated building, it is added to a pool of memories which can’t be evaded and enriches it, when it is bound to be preserved between layers of past and future times.”

I wish i could have been there.  Amazing.

Thanks to Meighan.

This simple home near Nagano is called Mountain Research.  The sleeping quarters are in the yellow domes (made by North Face) on top of the multi-level structure.  each of the other rooms are separate, simple spaces.  pretty cool, eh?

japan is a country of incredible paradoxes.  here in the west, it’s rare that we see communities cling to our tradition the way the japanese do.  it’s a shame really.  as a visitor, it seems to me that music, art, architecture, textiles, and social customs are all influenced to a great extend by a by-gone era.  at the same time, the country is teeming with new, new, new.  It’s a place where tranquil traditions and urgent modernity live side by side.

the vortex funnel house

i believe that humans are inherently creative.  but there are some who defy all ordinary parameters and take it to the next level.  Dan Havel and Dean Ruck are two wondrous examples.

They built this house in Houston, Texas – who’d have thought, right?  Anyways, they did it by peeling the formerly flat side of the house off and re-forming it into the vortex we see here.  Cool, eh?

In other news…

Jose Gonzalez was cancelled due to a family emergency.  Sad days.  He truly did leave a lovestain on my heart.  ah well, it’s for another day.

Got my first issue of Vice Magazine in the mail today.  Let the obscene take on pop culture and everything hipster begin.  Thanks Dr. BD for the lovely b-day gift.
