hi su-ki des (yes, i like it – in Japanese)

This simple home near Nagano is called Mountain Research.  The sleeping quarters are in the yellow domes (made by North Face) on top of the multi-level structure.  each of the other rooms are separate, simple spaces.  pretty cool, eh?

japan is a country of incredible paradoxes.  here in the west, it’s rare that we see communities cling to our tradition the way the japanese do.  it’s a shame really.  as a visitor, it seems to me that music, art, architecture, textiles, and social customs are all influenced to a great extend by a by-gone era.  at the same time, the country is teeming with new, new, new.  It’s a place where tranquil traditions and urgent modernity live side by side.
